uncle gary

i am lucky enough to live with my mother's sister's family which includes my uncle gary - a southern gentleman.

we were telling stories the other night about near death experiences (or silly situations that were potentially very dangerous).

he said he was riding his motorcycle one cold night and his nose kept running so he took a tissue and stuffed it up his nose :) he was driving along when all of a sudden the rest of the tissue flipped up and was plastered across his face, covering his eyes.

he's going 60 mph on the freeway in the cold and couldn't see. he reached one hand up to brush it down but he was wearing thick snow gloves and he couldn't get ahold of the tissue. so he carefully gripped his hand between his legs to pull of the glove and finally managed to pull the tissue off.

all while continuing at around 60 miles per hour on the freeway.

oddities about moi :)

there are certain things my family knows i'm particular about. for example, when my sisters borrow clothes, they know not to wash them because i wash my clothes a certain way.

before flushing a toilet i have to put the lid down. if it's a public restroom with no lid, i am poised to run the minute i flush the toilet.

i think i was traumatized watching a video on germs and bacteria when i was younger. anyone remember seeing the videos in school where the spray from a sneeze or toilet flushing is shown?

advance to about 50 seconds into the video for a really
disgusting shock...now image that spray coming from
the toilet.

i also get paranoid that my brush will make my hair greasy. so i have three brushes, pink = clean, green = not quite clean but not quite dirty, and clear = post work out or in desperate need of a shower. as time goes by and the brushes get dirtier they'll move down in rank...yes i'm bizarre.

i like you...here's some banana bread :)

so there is this boy at church whom i like. of course the minute i realized that i liked him...i became a blubbering idiot. therefore to do something (because something must be done), i baked him chocolate chip banana bread.

and since i'm a coward. i dropped it at his doorstep, without signing the note...yikes!!! i'm hoping that through a past conversation, referenced in the note, he'll figure out it was me. i'm a silly girl...sigh.

(this is the banana bread with walnuts instead of chocolate chips)

Date-Me-Please Banana Bread

1 2/3 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
-sift above together in bowl #1

1 cup sugar
2 eggs
-beat together till your arm goes numb (or activate your brain and use a beater till light and fluffy) in bowl #2

add to bowl #2 one by one
1/2 cup oil
3 1/2 very ripe bananas, mashed
2 tablespoons sour cream
1 teaspoon vanilla

add bowl #1 to bowl #2 along with a cup of semisweet chocolate chips

bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes in a greased or parchment paper lined loaf pan

grandmother and grandfather

i knocked on my grandparents door and could see my grandfather slowly making his way to open it. he recognized who it was, sighed, and said, "well katy, would you like to see my train?"

around the christmas tree a circular track was set up. my grandfather sat in his reading chair by the window with the train controls in his hand. he proceeded to show me how he can manipulate the lights, noise and movement.

he then stopped the train and told me how the process of setting it up had weighed heavily on him and he was glad it was done. setting up the train had in his words, "required much use of his mind".

the next worrisome item he stated was the fact that beds had to be made. my aunt and uncle, including their nine children, are coming to stay at my grandparents for christmas. my grandmother had stripped all the beds, cleaned the sheets, and now the beds must be remade. my grandmother requires the help of my grandfather because making a bed is much easier with two rather than one.

my grandfather said that he so dreaded making the beds that he lost sleep over it. he felt he could barely muster the strength to maybe make one bed a day.

the problem he related was that grandmother would ask, "how much sheet do you have on your side?" he would then have to relay to her descriptively whether it was just right, too little, too much or possibly just past the mattress, touching the floor, etc. the questions never stop he said. and no matter how closely he follows her directions, she almost always redoes his side anyways.

i volunteered my services, much to his delight, and proceeded to make beds with my grandmother. since we are both bed-making perfectionists it was little trouble and not in the least time consuming.

after finishing one room we got side tracked by christmas decorations. my grandfather came in, saw the situation and stated, "grandmother you are distracting our guest from making those beds." he really did not want to be left with grandmother to make them :)

once we finished he kept singing a song from the musical scrooge:

thank you very much!
thank you very much!
that's the nicest thing that anyone's ever done for me.

he sincerely was so grateful that i got him out of making beds with my grandmother.

now his worries have moved on to finishing the christmas decorating.

yum yums - rolo pecan pretzels

i put together a church choir and as an incentive to get people there i make treats each week. this week i'm going to make
rolo pecan pretzels.

preheat oven to 250 degrees. cover a cookie sheet with tinfoil and place one layer of pretzels down. place one rolo on each pretzel and bake for about 4 minutes or until the rolos are soft. remove tray from oven and immediately squish a pecan down on the rolo flattening it. let the tray cool (place in fridge) and once the chocolate hardens you're done!

salty, chocolatey, carmel goodness :)
